A forum for open discussion on communities and local government policy.

About

This forum has been created by Communities and Local Government to allow everyone with an interest in Communities and Local Government areas of responsibility to contribute their views on current policy and emerging issues.

This is a pilot forum, being evaluated by the independent Hansard Society. It builds on the success of a smaller pilot forum on the future of local government, which ran from 27 February to 25 June 2006. If successful, this extended pilot may lead to Communities and Local Government using discussion forums as standard for priority issues from early 2007.

Communities and Local Government

Communities and Local Government was created on 5 May 2006 with a powerful remit to promote community cohesion and equality, as well as responsibility for housing, urban regeneration, planning and local government.

It unites the communities and civil renewal functions previously undertaken by the Home Office, with responsibility for regeneration, neighbourhood renewal and local government (previously held by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister). Communities and Local Government brings together responsibility for equality policy, including policy on race, faith, gender and sexual orientation. These functions were previously split between several government departments.

For more information about the department, please visit www.communities.gov.uk.

‘Digital Dialogues’ pilot

This forum is being run within the Department of Constitutional Affairs’ ‘Digital Dialogues’ pilot.

The pilot will explore the potential of information and communication technology to support central government communications and consultations. Support and evaluation is being provided by the Hansard Society, an independent, non-partisan charity.

More information about the Hansard Society and its work is available at www.hansardsociety.org.uk.
